I’ve been thinking a lot about darkness and light this week. That’s been the subject of a handful of devotions I’m working on for my new 365-day devo (did I tell you I’m writing a new one? More later on this project!)
Maybe my interest is drawn to this subject because we’re entering a season of celebrating the Light of the World piercing our darkness through the form of a baby in a manger. (That’s my interpretation of why we put lights on our Christmas trees and houses!)
It could be because, like you, I feel like I’m finally leaving behind a den of personal darkness and loss during the previous few Covid isolation years and stepping into a new day flooded with the light of hope.
Or maybe I am learning to find sustenance for my soul from the Light of Papa God’s presence every single day, regardless of my circumstances. I sure hope that’s the case. It makes such a HUGE difference in my attitude when I’m constantly aware of His presence as a light guiding me through the world’s darkness.
So today I want to share with you a few scriptures that are helping me plot my journey out of the darkness and toward light and life and joy:
“God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5 NASB).
“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord” (Psalm 89:15 NLT).
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8: 12 NKJV).
“Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness, you shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight” (Isaiah 58:11 MSG).
I especially like that last one because I grin at the mental image of me glowing in a white tee shirt like we used to wear roller skating beneath the blacklights at the skating rink on Friday nights while I was growing up. Yep. I yearn to glow for Jesus in the blacklights and bad news of this world. Don’t you?
So my BFF (Blessed Friend Forever), which of these verses speak out loud to you today? Can you think of any more scriptures that encourage you to flip on the Light in your life? Please take a moment to comment – your community of BFFs would love to hear from you!
